OPC UA
Interoperability standard for industrial automation
Official spec ↗OPC UA
OPC UA (Unified Architecture) is the interoperability standard of Industry 4.0ITermIndustry 4.0Industry 4.0 is the integration of IoT, cloud, AI and edge computing into manufacturing to connect machines, optimize processes and automate decisions.View profile: a platform-independent, object-oriented information model that lets PLCs, SCADA, MES and cloud systems share data and semantics securely.
It defines built-in security (encryption, authentication, signing) and two communication modes: client-server (request/response) and, since OPC UA over TSN/PubSub, publish-subscribe for deterministic real-time.
Compatible devices
- PLCs and industrial controllers
- SCADA/MES systems
- Industrial and edge gateways
