INA219

Current, voltage and power monitor (I2C)

Audio summary
0:00 / 0:00

I2C sensor measuring current, voltage and power across a shunt. For consumption metering.

The INA219 is the convenient way to measure how much energy a circuit draws: it senses the drop across a shunt resistor and the bus voltage, computing current and power internally. Everything comes out over I2C, already scaled.

It's used in battery monitoring, IoT-node consumption profiling and small solar panels. For higher currents or isolated measurement, the INA226/INA3221 family extends the range.

Pros

  • Measures current, voltage and power over I2C
  • No analogue maths or MCU ADC needed
  • Ideal for profiling IoT consumption

Cons

  • Bus limited to 26 V
  • Non-isolated (high-side) measurement
