LTE-M (LTE Cat-M1) is 3GPP's cellular IoT variant aimed at a balance of power, bandwidth and mobility. Unlike NB-IoT, it supports cell handover and voice (VoLTE), making it suitable for moving devices.

With PSM and eDRX power-saving modes it reaches years of battery life, and it reuses operators' existing LTE networks. It is the choice for mobile trackers, wearables, alarms and telemetry that need more than NB-IoT's few kbps.

Compatible devices

  • Mobile asset trackers
  • Wearables and connected alarms
  • Cellular modules (e.g. u-blox SARA)
